On the whole, Neat Video has done wonders with some of my noisier footage but be prepared for it to soften things considerably. Not always, but often. And trying to sharpen from there can introduce a whole new set of annoying artifacts. That's not to say what the people at Neat Video have put together isn't down right amazing at times. But like all things, moderation is key. A gentle brush stroke can often be more effective than pressing the brush down firmly against the canvas.
And sometimes you just have to accept that noise is a part of the shot. Sometimes removing it can end up creating a weird unnatural look and there are even times you can rescue a shot by embracing the noise and using it. Video editing, like any art-form, is a spectrum. Clean is nice, but so is dirty when used appropriately. I think the obsession with clean, clear and sharp video, while justifiable, can often keep us stuck in a corner. Stretch your legs and see what you can do on the dark side.
